- Cristo Recogiendo Su Ropa despues de los Azotes Retablo
- Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial, ca. 1850 to 1900 CE. An extremely rare retablo representing El Cristo de la Columna or Scourged Christ as he is scourged at a pillar before crucifixion; the colonnade and instruments of his castigation in close proximity and perhaps at one of the Stations of the Cross from the church in Queretaro where the infamous Emperor Maximillan received his last communion before being executed on the Hill of Bells following his defeat by the army of Benito Juarez. This theme depicting the tortured and bloody Christ was quite popular with prisoners who could empathize with the subject. For a very similar example, see "Saints and Sinners: Mexican Devotional Art" edited by James Caswell (The California Heritage Museum, 2006), p. 37. This example is a rare and richly dramatic depiction! Includes a custom red velvet mat and painted wood frame. Wired on verso for suspension. Size: retablo itself measures 9" x 5-1/2" (22.9 x 14 cm); framed 15" x 11-3/4" (38.1 x 29.8 cm)
