The Story

Kuyo/ Kouyou Ottote Worship Figurine, Congo
In earlier times, the Kuyu were divided into two totemic clans: the one of the panther in the west, and the one of the snake in the east.
The Ottoté, a secret masculine society, played an important political role in the appointment of chiefs. The initiation of young people came to an end by the revelation of the snake god Ebongo, represented in the form of a head.
The dances accompanying the ceremony reactivated the successive stages of creation. The clan of the panther had a drum for emblem. The clan of the snake had carved heads painted in bright colors, placed on sticks that the manipulator, hidden under a long dress, held his hands outstretched above his head.
