The Story

  • Lega Idumu Mask, DR Congo #295
  • Idimu Mask. It is used during Initiations to both Yananyo and Kindi. Yananio and Kindi initiates take part in Dance Performances (Kamondo) which preceded the Initiation Ceremonies of a male candidate to Yananio Grade of the Bwami Society.
  • Wood with blackened glossy patina, traces of pigment (kaolin), raffia.
  • Measurements: 24×20×9 cm
  • Condition: Slight gaps around the mouth, very slight cracks of desiccation (almost invisible), traces of Ritual Use and care.
  • Estimate age: Second half of the 20th century.
  • Provenance: Private European Collection.
