The Story

  • Lobi Stool Very Fine Large Size, Burkina Faso #568 PROVENANCE
  • Zoomorphic three legged stool with twine handle, Lobi People, Burkina Faso.
  • Measurements: approx. 19 1/2" L.
  • Traditionally, three-legged stools are used by men, whereas four-legged stools are used by women.
Utilitarian objects as well as personal objects denoting social status, Lobi stools are often personalized with decorative elements making special to its owner.

The name Lobi originates from two Lobiri words: lou (forest) and bi (children), meaning literally, “children of the forest” who settled initially on the left bank of the Mouhoun River or the Black Volta dividing Burkina Faso and Ghana.

  • Provenance: Estate of Thomas McNemar, (1931-2020.) McNemar lived and collected throughout Central and West Africa in the 1960s and 70s. He established Galleries of African Art in New York and San Francisco, selling to Museums and public and private collections in the United States and Europe.
