The Story

  • Nuestra Senora del Pueblito de Queretero Retablo
  • Our Lady of the Village of Queretero
  • Late 19th Century Original Retablo Oil Painting on Tin created in Mexico.
  • Retablo dimensions are approx. 10 inches horizontal x 14 inches vertical.
  • Condition: in excellent, clean, original condition with some minor paint loss acquired over more than a century of use and devotional prayer.
  • Nuestra Senora del Pueblito de Queretero, or Our Lady of Queretero, is a very rare and obscure image in Mexican Retablo Art. The image was originally modeled after a painting by Peter Paul Rubens titled "Allegory in Honor of the Franciscan Order."
  • The image has a great deal of symbolism. Our Lady floats above the shoulders of St. Francis, who is holding three globes that symbolize the three Franciscan orders. El Nino de Praga (the Infant of Prague) stands to her side.
  • There is a sliver of moon on which she stands. The meaning of the silver crescent moon parallels with the "Woman of the Apocalypse", described in the Book of Revelation as a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Our Lady wears a traditional-style Spanish colonial crown and royal robing.
