The Story

  • Okimono Figurine "Selflessness Child" Japan Cast Iron Figure
  • An Okimono is a Japanese ornamental item, often in the form of a human figure. Okimono are typically displayed in a Tokonoma Alcove or placed on a  Butsudan Altar.
  • A child with rounded cheeks like a Baby Buddha, who wears a cloth that is too large and Japanese sandals. The word “muga” means Attaining Spiritual Enlightenment in the world of Zen. While many artists mostly expressed Enlightenment by painting images of the Lord Buddha and High Priests, the artist Yokoyama Taikan (Nov 2, 1868 - Feb 26, 1958) expressed the original painted image with just an idea of an innocent child.
  • This innovative idea led the 29-year-old up-and-coming artist Taikan to his success. 
  • Made of Iron with Gold Burnish.
  • Measures approx 5" x 3 1/2" x 10" H
  • Comes with a small unattached stand to rest the Figure on. Stand measurements are approx 5" x 5" x 1 1/4" H
  • The figurine is in a good, vintage condition with wear. There are also some cracks on the sides of the head. Please see all photos.
