The Story

  • Tuareg Pyramidal Charm Amulets 2
  • These distinctive amulets are in the symbolic shape related to as Talhakimt. They are found across Islamic Africa, in particular among the nomadic Tuareg-Berber peoples of Niger, Mali and Algeria. They possibly derive from Indian agate finger rings or even archer's thumb rings. The pyramidal shape is also related to Tuareg Cross amulets.
  • In Sudan during the 1930s, British scholar and administrator A. J. Arkell identified two main types of Tuareg ornaments – the arrowhead-ring type Talhakimt and the metal Cross of Agadez— both worn as pendants and believed to bring good luck and provide protection from wicked spirits and Djinn. The cross is not directly associated with either Christianity or Islam but the three and four arms do relate to points of direction; particularly important as Tuareg Groups are often Nomadic. Tuareg amulets in silver or silver colored metal are often are believed to repel evil and ensure safe travels.
  • Measure approx. (A) 1 3/4" x 2 1/2", (B) 2" x 2", (C) 2" x 2 1/4", (D) 1 7/8" x 2 1/2"
  • German silver, sometimes called alpacca silver is a copper alloy with nickel and often zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc.
