The Story
- Yaka Handheld Mask, Congo
- Stylistic Handheld Mask of the Yaka tribe, Africa, Congo.
- The Mask was held high during Initiation Rituals, so it towered above the onlookers/ Initiates.
- This Initiate's Mask has an upturned nose, a characteristic of Yaka artistic taste. The use of pigments, vegetal fibers and the spectacular spikes on top of the head creates an overall feeling of mystery.
- There is a nice white kaolin clay layer on the face with some Tukula red pigment.
- Measurements: 68×25×23 cm
- Condition: Good, clear traces of wear and Ritual Use
- Ca. 1950-60
