The Story
- Yaure Anoman Mask, Ivory Coast
- This mask is topped by a bird which is very likely related to the Dié masculine society. It appears by group during rejoicings which can gather several villages.
- Originally, these kinds of masks named “Anoman” (bird) were only worn in funerals. In contact with death, it was invested with a dangerous force. Its role was to appease the manes of the deceased and to mobilize them for the sake of the family and village. Masked men honored the Yu, representing intermediate spirits, between gods and men.
